Description: This medal was manufactured in 1959 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic or DDR (DDR). The German Democratic Republic (GDR) informally called East Germany by the West, was the communist state established in 1949 in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany and in the East Berlin portion of the Allied-occupied capital city. The GDR consisted geographically of northeast Germany rather than all of eastern Germany. This 10th anniversary badge is made of metal and enamel and consists of two pieces. The top bar has a safety clasp (pin) fastener on the reverse. The front of top bar features the county's colors (black, red and yellow) and the text, "10 JAHRE DDR". The planchet features the symbol of East Germany. There is nothing on the reverse. Overall, the pin measures slightly over 1 ¼ inches tall and ¾ inches wide.
