Description: VERY RARE SIGNED book "Destination Palestine: The Story of the Haganah Ship Exodus 1947" by Ruth Gruber. Before Leon Uris there was Ruth Gruber. She was an American journalist, photographer, writer, and war correspondent who covered the story of the famous ship "The Exodus". The author gives a vivid account of what happened before dawn on July 17, 1947 when five British destroyers and one cruiser attacked this lone, valiant vessel, and littered its decks with dying and grievously wounded. Those who died in the battle came to their rest in Palestine, the survivors were taken back to Germany. Ruth Gruber was there as a witness to deaths in Haifa and the refusal of the British Navy to allow the Exodus to allow her passengers to disembark. She followed the DPs to Cyprus and Southern France, with plans for their ultimate return to the holdings pens of Germany. This book is the real thing. A non-stop page-turner of the true story behind the Hollywood version. It includes 32 photographs by the author (who lived to be 105). This is a first edition, with dust jacket and in good condition signed to a Captain Dan Maltese, who MAY have been a captain on one of the refugee ships.
