It is a powerful work, centered around an extended conversation between a Black ex-con and evangelical Christian and a white atheist and professor, who together contemplate the meaning of life, death, and faith. The play was first produced by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, directed by Sheldon Patinkin, and starring Freeman Coffey and Austin Pendleton. It premiered on May 18, 2006. The Steppenwolf Backstage magazine contains six pages of content pertaining to The Sunset Limited, with additional content dedicated to Don DeLillo's play Love-Lies-Bleeding. The Sunset Limited received only modest recognition until it was developed into a feature film by HBO in 2010, directed by Tommy Lee Jones and starring Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, in what amounts to some of the finest performances by either actor. First Printing, a trade paperback original.
