Description: This is a neat, intriguing piece of South Carolina and Confederate military postal history! This provisional, "PAID 3," Independent South Carolina/Confederate cover(relatively clean, but only having about 45% of its back flap, and open on 2.75 sides) was sent to a Miss Belle Smith, Greenwood, South Carolina, in 1862. It was sent in, "Care of Colonel Wyatt Aiken," an officer who served in the Confederate Army(7th South Carolina Infantry) who initially served with the South Carolina Sate Militia before the creation of the Confederate Sates of America! From online records, Wyatt Aiken was made a colonel in mid May, 1862. From other research, Miss Belle Smith looks to have been none other than Isabella Smith Simpson, a sister-in-law of Colonel Aiken's! She was the younger sister of Colonel Aiken's second wife, Virginia Caroline Smith Aiken, and three brothers who served in the Confederate Army, Augustus Marshall Smith(1st South Carolina Reg.), William Joel Smith(1st Reg. South Carolina Rifles), and George Miles Smith(a cadet at the Citadel at the start of the war who would fight 4 years, mostly in Virginia)! It's possible that this mail was sent by one of those brothers. Noted imperfections aside, this remains a nifty piece of South Carolina and Confederate military postal history!
