Description: Amazing tintype of a Confederate soldier holding a rifle and Bowie knife. I believe the rifle was the famous model 1859 Colt revolving rifle, but I'm not 100% on the model... I do know that Civil War images with revolving rifles are hard to find. 3" x 1 3/4" tintype comes with, but not affixed to, a 4" x 2.5" paper sleeve. The sleeve seems later so I highly doubt it's original to the image, which has mat abrasions (see below). I have provided scans and cell phone pics of the image. Note that in my scan, a mat is partially visible, so this tintype is a period, c.1865 photographer's copy tintype of what I believe was most likely a c.1861-62 ambrotype. Notice the two abrasions near the bottom of the tintype... clearly mat abrasions, so I believe that this tintype was originally cased, and considering its size, was likely housed in one of those "CDV-sized / 8th plate" cases that were pretty common during Civil War... now it's in this sleeve. Condition of the tintype is very good antique, or better. Light surface wear and/or grime, one little flaw down by the stock of the rifle, plus the mat abrasions mentioned above. NO BENDS. This is guaranteed to be an original circa 1865 tintype, NOT a modern reprint of any kind. Boxed & insured PRIORITY MAIL. Discounted Express is also available.
