COLOR WOODCUT Signed ~ MID-CENTURY ABSTRACT ~ Dated 1953 American LISTED ARTIST

Description: A very interesting Mid-Century modern hand signed color woodcut by noted American printmaker Bernard Reder (1897-1963). This nine color 1953 print is titled, "Flowers Behind a Door" and is printed on very fine Japanese washi paper. A large woodcut, the image measures 16 × 20 inches, sheet size is approx. 18 x 22 inches. The lower margin is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, it is also signed and dated in the block. The paper shows mild age toning at edges, a couple spots in the margins, marginal handling creases, and some some losses to the edges that will be matted out, otherwise in excellent condition and will frame up beautifully. Other impressions of this same Reder woodcut are in the permanent collections of: the Victoria & Albert Museum; the Rhode Island School of Design Museum; the Hammer Museum; the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; the Yale University Art Gallery; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art https://philamuseum.org/collection/object/54513 Bernard Reder (1897-1963) was a well regarded American sculptor of animated, baroque figures and a dedicated printmaker. He was born in Czernowitz, Bukovina (now part of Ukraine). After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he supported himself by carving cemetery monuments while sculpting in his spare time. At the suggestion of a friend, the sculptor Aristide Maillol, he moved to Paris. Four years later, with the outbreak of World War II, he joined the flood of Jewish refugees and traveled to the south of France. He soon fled, via Cuba, to New York, arriving in 1943. Two years later, after a serious illness left him partially paralyzed, Reder began to focus on drawings and woodcuts, frequently depicting biblical themes alongside more cryptic images that sprang from his own imagination. He carefully inked and printed his woodcuts himself, and although he printed standard editions, he often pulled only single impressions of his prints. He frequently traveled from his home in New York to Rome and Florence and created architectural designs in addition to his other artworks. Reder's work is included in the permanent collections of: the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C; the New York Public Library; Hofstra University; and many others.
