During those dark years, black Traction Avant's driven by flying squads of Gestapo agents terrorized the population. For a time, the car’s twin-chevron grille will be a harbinger of evil. Traction Avant's were also favored by the Resistance, and as occupation gave way to Liberation they turned up all over France with FFI (force France de l’Interieur) inscribed proudly on their doors. Less gloriously, the cars were known as favorites among gangsters such as the then infamous Pierrot le Fou and his Traction gang.
