Description: OLIVER TWIST [or The Parish Boy's Progress]. In Three Volumes Author: Dickens, Charles [1812 - 1870] Title: OLIVER TWIST [or The Parish Boy's Progress]. In Three Volumes Publication: London: Richard Bentley, 1839 - 1840 Edition: New Edition [cf. Tillotson Transactions of the Bibliographical Society. Fifth Series, Vol. XVIII, No. 2, June 1963; Smith, Notes 5d and 5e] Description: Three volumes: [2], 331, [1, blank], [4, ads] pp.; [2], 307, [1, blank] pp.; [2], 315, [1, blank] pp. 24 engraved plates by George Cruikshank. 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5". Publisher's original dark red-brown diaper cloth, vertically-ribbed, with gilt spine lettering (imprint present); arabesque design in blind to the boards. Average wear to extremities; spines sunned; light foxing and occasional edge-darkening to plates. VG. Volumes I and II of the Bentley's fictitious "new edition," printed from the plates of the Second Edition, with Vol III of the 1840 publication (this volume entirely reset and printed by Schulze). Given the matched casings, we presume the sheets were sent by the publisher to bindery at the same time and so sold as a set in 1840. Tillotson mentions having seen only one other copy of the New Edition, at the London Library, rebound and lacking the advertisements; Smith notes that it is "[v]ery scarce" and adds that the 1840 issue is also "quite scarce."
