This book is written in the hope that it may remind us that though we may be deeply engrossed in the pleasures and pains of everyday existence, life is meaningless if God does not come ﬁrst. The blueprint for this has been set out for us by the author of the ‘Te Deum’. He has done, this with a clarity which the English version too readily conceals. For the English translation says ‘We praise thee, O God. . .’ thus putting humanity first. The Latin says ‘Te Deum, laudamus . . .’ and the primacy of God is immediately recognised and proclaimed. To follow it, therefore, ought to have some unique value in our day. So long as one starts from humanity it is impossible to see a pattern in the affairs of the World. But the moment the being of God is taken as a primary conviction, other things begin to fall into place. The ultimate justification for seeking the -good life is not in the good life itself but in God. Yet the idea of God results in frustration rather than fulﬁlment unless it is related to everyday life.
