She'll be in and out of service this week and available for $16k. --Give YCM a call if interested! So, this 1985 Boston Whaler Montauk 17 arrived @ YCM yesterday afternoon -from about 10 miles away. She’s a local boat, we bought her from a gentleman in his early 80s, who bought her way back in 2001 from the original owner. He first reached out to us back in February, but after a great deal of back and forth, several more calls and the occasional email, he wasn’t quite ready to let her go. By last week’s call, he was ready -and armed with a folder containing printouts of every single seventeen foot Boston Whaler ever posted on York County Marine’s website! He had added up all the prices, divided by the number of boats, and declared the average as his asking price. That’s a lot of printer ink, and certainly an interesting approach -it also made for another long conversation… The boat’s a classic beauty, showing a few of the bumps and bruises of the past 40 years - 1985 was after all, a long time ago! While bottom painted, she’s been kept on a lift, or in a covered carport for the past 25 years. In early 2020, just minutes before the wheels of the world came off the bus, he re-powered with a brand new outboard motor -a feat that would soon prove impossible for most, as supplies quickly dried up, production ground to a halt and demand skyrocketed. It would take a full two years for new outboard motor supply to begin stabilizing. His choice was Yamaha’s F70 - light, powerful, quiet, efficient and often considered the perfect match for Whaler’s classic 15 and 17 foot hulls! With a 70, you can expect quick planing times, speeds in the mid to upper 30s, and terrific fuel economy. Classic Whalers also handle better and sit higher in the water with lighter motors -that Yamaha F70 is 100 pounds lighter than anything else in its class! Our Montauk by the way, floats as high and level as any we’ve ever seen. Montauk’s were served up in the 70s, 80s and 90s with a mix of Johnson, Evinrude, Mercury, and later Yamaha 70-90 hp outboards. If your fishing buddies resemble the offensive line of the Detroit Lions, or all you want to do is competitive slalom skiing, mixed with acrobatic wakeboarding, or you just absolutely need to go really fast -get the 90, otherwise, the 70 really is perfect! Our Yamaha F70 has 102 total hours, 71 of those hours were below 2000 RPM! That’s just kinda puttin along… So, what did our 80 something, civic-minded, proud Naval Academy graduate, senior citizen owner do with this Montauk? He absolutely loves picking up trash from the local waters, beaches and shorelines -that’s a pretty easy life for a boat, and not a bad hobby. She comes with three matching WM J Mills covers - console, reversible pilot seat, and mooring.
