After his blistering start to the 1991 season winning the first four races, Williams had started to dominate and it took until the tenth race for Senna to win again but a strong finish meant he clinched the championship in Japan and followed it up with his win in Australia. It was Senna's third drivers' title and third championship in four years and Honda's sixth successive world title. The battle for the 1991 championship had been fought out between Senna in his McLaren Honda and Nigel Mansell in the rapidly improving Williams Renault.
