Twenty-four bi-weekly issues of The Avatar were published from June 9, 1967 through April 26, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts. Nos. 18 through 23 (Feb 2 through April 12, 1968) were in large newspaper format (17½" x 23") of 8-12 pages, with a tabloid "magazine" insert (16-24 pages, often un-numbered); Brian Keating, Wayne Hansen, Editors; Eben Given, Artist; John Wilton, Bob MacQuaid, Ed Fox. Its themes were largely political, both local and national. Its resident charismatic philosopher, Mel Lyman was the draw for me. There weren't many sources for it in NYC but I knew where they were. If one was sold-out I'd go to the next and grab the train uptown to my crib, smiling inwardly at the potential of having my brain tickled by Mel. And, this issue gushes Mr. Lyman.
