Description: Rare late 19th- or early 20th-century German-language bookmark or holy card featuring an image of what appears to be Saint Agnes. She is holding a lamb in her arms and is in a field of lilies. Below this colorful image is a portion of Matthew 28:20 written in German. The reverse has a hand-written verse in ink. Below the verse is the name "M. Philumena." Measures approximately 1 1/2" by 3 7/8". In good condition. Some age toning and light soiling. Bumped corner. According to Wikipedia "Agnes of Rome (c. 291 – c. 304) is a virgin martyr, venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheranism. She is one of seven women who, along with the Blessed Virgin, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. Agnes is depicted in art with a lamb, evoking her name which resembles the Latin word for 'lamb', agnus ." Update: according to input from a fellow ebayer, the image may depict the Child Jesus holding the lamb, rather than Saint Agnes. Nice image, in either case.
