Description: Napoleon III style inwell from Mappin & Webb. This piece is bronze and enamel, featuring intricate patterns of a dragon fighting a lion, two knights on horseback and a bird. Mappin & Webb, the international jewelers founded by Jonathan Mappin in Sheffield in 1775. His great grandson, John Newton Mappin, and John's brother in law George Webb, began to focus on electroplating and cutlery and opened the first Mappin & Webb store in London in 1860. They store eventually became the official silversmith to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the Prince of Wales. Napoleon III style, also known as the Second Empire style, was popular from 1852 to 1870. This piece would be worth more if it didn't have the scratches on the bottom - price has been reduced accordingly. Condition: Name scratched in bottom. Some oxidation. Could use a clean. See photos.
