It comes with a scabbard with matching serial number! The M1874 bayonet was a conversion of the M1866 Chassepot design that enabled the use of centerfire cartridges. They were produced by Chatellerault, St. Etienne and Tulle. This was made by St. Etienne. These bayonets are marked on the spine with the factory, month and year of production. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Interestingly, the button has been replaced with a screw nut. It slides through no problem, but it is not original. There is also a little bit of oxidation on the catch. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have light oxidation. The brass pommel has started to tarnish and the guard has started to turn a darker patina color. The two (2x) rivets securely fasten the wood grip panels. They also have oxidized. The grip panels have draglines, scrapes and compressions. The most notable compression is on the left side grip panel. The wood has darkened with age. The T-back spine and sides have light handling marks, scrapes. There are no nicks or dings on the blade edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white with some light scattered discoloration. The top of the spine is marked "Mre d'Armes de St. Etienne Xhe 1879". The right ricasso and right side quillon have proof marks. The left side quillon has more proof marks on the quillon and serial number "L 10782". It matches the scabbard. This scabbard is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The metal frog loop is securely fastened to the body. The mouth, body and finial have scattered oxidation and scrapes. Most of the original finish still remains and has started to turn a darker patina color. The scabbard has the serial number "L 10782" which matches the bayonet! This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your French Gras M1874 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. With a little clean up this could look very nice.
