Description: Huge etched facsimile of Andrea Mantegna’s engraving ‘The Virgin and Child’ produced between 1470 and 1480. Photo-etched from the final-state impression at the Bibliothèque National and printed in black ink with probably a small amount of brown. One of only 40 impressions taken on cream-colored vèlin de Madagascar in 1928. Even beyond the specific religious reference, this large and accurate intaglio facsimile of Mantegna's timeless, monumental image stands after 550 years as a profound universal statement on a mother's love for her child. This etching is in outstanding condition after almost a century. Small remnants of original 1928 mounting at the very top corners of reverse. Please see the photos. Platemarks: 11.75 x 9.75 inches; Sheet: 16.75 x 11.75 inches. Shipped in archival glassine in a heavy-duty tube. Thank you for looking at my lot.
