Description: Amusing WW2 Field Post 1942 German Soldier in Munich Letter & Cover to Family A very interesting typed letter from a German soldier stationed in Munich Germany in October 1942. He tells of various experiences with other soldiers in his unit, along with the typical military jargon and complaints from a field soldier. One of the most amusing phrases within his letter is “service is service; schnapps is schnapps.” The blue paper envelope measures 6 3/8“ x 4.5“ and has some tears and folds here and there. There is a bit of residue in the upper left front corner where it appears a stamp used to be, or perhaps a label. The folded letter inside measures 8.25 inches by just under 6 inches. My guess is that the requirement to send a free “field post“ envelope included a maximum of one page per envelope at the time. Therefore, this soldier, who was lucky enough to have access to a typewriter, typed his letter and filled both sides of the page. A Unique insight from a German soldier’s perspective.
