Description: AFRICAN ETHNIC TRIBAL ARTWORK 4 WOOD SCULPTURES, Metal MASK, & Wood DRUM This is a lot of AFRICAN ethnic tribal artwork that includes four sculptures, one framed mask, and one Drum. We are happy to offer this lot of African tribal artworks. This lot of African ethnic/tribal artworks includes four wood sculptures, a framed bronze mask, and one wood and tanned hide drum. The framed mask is 6 1/4 inches wide, by 8 1/4 inches tall, and 1 3/8 inches deep. The frame box is a tight grained wood. The frame holds a mask mounted on a rough, dark fabric background. The mask itself is a bronze color. The mask measures approximately 5 1/8 inches tall, by 3 1/2 inches wide. The mask is a bronze color, but I cannot be sure of the material used to create the mask. The first of the sculptures is of an Alligator, this sculpt is approximately 19 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide at the back legs, and approximately 2 1/4 inches tall. The sculpt is made from a light weight wood and has been stained a deep brown. The mouth is highlighted, showing the natural color of the wood, and there are slightly worn areas on the tops of the eye ridges, and the scales on the tail that show this lighter wood as well. The second sculpt is of a tribesman with red hair pulled up into top not and clad in a loin cloth. The style is primitive, The carving of the face is angular, the finish overall is smooth, stained dark with a chalky white substance in the grooves. The wood is a low density. This sculpt measures 13 1/2 inches, 3 1/2 inches wide, and 3 deep. The third sculpt is a wonderful rendition, or portrait of a contemporary man, of perhaps African origins. He wears a domed pate, hat with a squared brim. The sculpt is made of a dense grained heavier dark wood. The carving shows the divets of the artists chisels resulting in large and small planes that make up the features of the face, The technique is loose, but aesthetically pleasing. This sculpt measures 7 3/8 inches tall, by 3 inches wide, by 4 inches deep. The fourth sculpture is the largest being approximately 15 1/2 inches tall. It is a beautiful mixed media sculpt that incorporates the use of thin sheets of textured metal that have been used to adorn the dress of the subject. The sculpt is a kind of bust, but is clearly made as a wall hanging piece. The head of the subject has black hair pulled up into a tight top knot. The planes of the face are flat and angular. Two half round textured sheet metal pieces adorn the hairline and fore head of the face. The collar that wraps around and under the chin has the textures sheet metal attached to it. The forward thrusting neck is long, and ringed, set in a deeply vertically grooved chest. The piece is stained is reddish brown in the area of the face, and arms, with black stain used in the hair, and chest. The back of the sculpt is flat and hollowed out. As previously stated this sculpt is 15 1/2 inches tall, by 5 1/4 inches wide, and 3 1/4 inches deep. The last item in the lot is a drum. This drum is made of wood and tanned animal hide. The body of the drum is a single piece of wood that has eleven carved vertical half round columns around the body of the drum. Both the top and bottom of the drum have stretched hide heads held in place with hide laces. The wood of the drum body looks to be raw unfinished wood. This drum is 12 3/8 inches tall, and 8 1/2 inches in diameter. Condition- All the pieces in lot look to be in good condition. There are no broken, or chipped pieces. The works are primitive tribal folk art This is a wonderful collection of tribal African folk art. These pieces would make wonderful additions to any collection of African art.
