Description: Abraham Lincoln; M P Lee, after painting by William Edgar Marshall (1837-1906); stipple and line engraving; publ. D Appleton & Co., c 1898. Oval 7 x 9", sheet 10 x 12". Image very good, small pinhole right of ear at oval edge, repaired; two small tears at margins repaired with archival mending tape. Possibly a re-strike by Appleton of an engraving in the collection of the Library of Congress (see pic), the only example of this engraving by Lee (no information found) that I have been able to find. This engraving does not appear in the extensive collection of engraved portraits of Lincoln collected by James T Mitchell (Chief Justice of Pennsylvania) that came to auction in 1907 (Davis, Henkels, and Harvey). Interestingly, Marshall, who also created an engraving after his painting of Lincoln, did an engraved portrait (see pic) of William Henry Appleton (1814-1899), son of the founder of the firm, and long time president. That engraving has a similar format to this piece, including image in an oval and faux signature of the subject. That engraving of Appleton (held by the British Museum) was published in the American Bookseller (vol. 19, no.7, April 1,1886). Perhaps Lee's engraving of Lincoln also appeared in that publication.
