Description: A South-Side View of Slavery; or, Three Months at the South in 1854 By Nehemiah Adams Published: T.R. Marvin,, Boston:, 1854. 214 pp. Hardcover in blind stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine is partially faded. Binding is sound, with minor rubbing to extremities; otherwise very good. Adams (1808-1878) was born in Salem and was opposed to slavery, but felt some of the abolitionists were exaggerating what was happening in the south. However, some of his comments would suggest that not everything was being exaggerated. In is chapter on Slave auctions, he describes how he felt when a one year old child was being sold, and taken from its parents. He also shares his thoughts on the "peaceful" dissolution of the Union because of slavery, which he did not think was possible.
