Chert / flint stone such as this makes an excellent fire starter when struck with carbon steel or when scraped against a ferrocerium rod (see video). But due to this rock's rare large size and shape, this stone would be idea for knapping into a large spear point, axe blade or tomahawk head. Due to its weight, size and shape, it would also make a good hammer stone. Large stones such as this are hard to find.Total weight is approximately 5 pounds 8.5 ounces. Though irregularly shaped, it is roughly a parallelogram with a curved top. Its edges measures approximately 5.5" on the bottom. The sides are 4" and 4.5" respectively. The curved top is approximately 7" wide at its widest. It is approximately 2" thick. This chert / flint rock has not been heat-treated or processed in any way. This specimen appears to be of exceptional purity, but because this is a natural product, it will likely contain fissures, inclusions or fractures. Chert and Jasper are the general name for several types of stone that are extremely hard and fracture into pieces with sharp edges. Flint is usually chert that is grey. This stone is reddish / brown.
