I guarantee it.” – Joe Namath responding to a heckler at a Miami sports banquet three days before Super Bowl III Leading the Alabama Crimson Tide to a National Championship in 1964, legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant referred to Namath as “the greatest athlete I ever coached.” No player better represents the NFL and AFL Draft bidding wars as Namath was selected in the first round by the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals and on the same day, was the overall first pick by the AFL’s New York Jets in the upstart league’s 1965 draft. The 1965 AFL Rookie of the Year was twice named the league’s Most Valuable Player and was the first professional quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a single season. To date, no other Jets quarterback has accomplished this feat. Cementing his legacy by delivering on the guarantee of a Jets victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, “Broadway Joe” became an advertising and cultural icon as a noted bachelor playing in the nation’s media capital.
