Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. The idea behind this noble experiment was to cut down on air pollution by burning railroad cars for metal salvage inside an experimental device in Chicago Wednesday. A railroad car was placed inside the building and set afire. The smoke was then drawn through a duct into the chimney (at left) that was supposed to extract most of the pollutants and release only white puffs. But it flunked the test. Not only did thick black clouds of smoke belch from the chimney, but the shed itself began to smoke, adding to the pollution.Photo measures 9.25 x 8inches. Photo is dated 06-25-1970.
