It was formed in 1901 when several steamship companies were merged. Eastern went through several bankruptcies, mergers and reorganizations in the subsequent decades. The company operated eight sea-going ships at the start of World War II, but only two survived to return to service. Eastern expanded services to Florida and the Caribbean in the 1950s and 1960s, but the company was sold to a Norwegian firm in 1970 and lost its corporate identity. For auction is a brochure dated May 20, 1947 promoting Eastern's services between Boston, Massachusetts and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. The ship used was the SS Yarmouth, one of the two ships that survived World War II. This publication contains sailing schedules; also included are railroad connections with the Dominion Atlantic Railway Company and the Canadian National Railways at Yarmouth, which allowed passengers to continue their journeys to such Nova Scotia towns as Sydney, Truro and Halifax. A fare schedule is included, also. An inside cabin cost as little as $3.75, and a deluxe outside bedroom with bath was $13.50. Meals were not included, but the ship had restaurants. Autos could be transported for $22.00 one-way or $35.00 round-trip. This brochure measures appx 9x4 inches unopened, opens to appx 9x8 inches, and is printed on a medium-weight semi-glossy paperstock. It is in very good condition, even considering that it is over 70 years old and shows little if any use. There are no rips, tears, writing or markings. A nice collectible for the steamship fan.
