First published in 1819, it details the adventures of a Dutch-American villager in colonial America, who meets mysterious Dutchmen, imbibes their liquor, falls asleep in the Catskill Mountains, and doesn't awaken for 20 years.Everett Shinn puts a modern spin on the story in this 1939 version of the book. In the "Introduction" he weaves a tale of vacationing in a cabin in the Catskills in 1939, and finding a book on the bookshelf about Rip Van Winkle. Curious, he decides to follow Van Winkle's described path into the mountains, and there meets the old man "Rip" himself, as well as the dwarfish bowlers. Upon returning to his cabin he decides to illustrate has adventures, and present them in this book, which coincidentally parallel and accompany Washington Irving's tale. The book features color pastedowns over hardboard covers. It features the "old" Van Winkle on the outside and the "young" Van Winkle on the inside. After the Introduction by Everett Shinn, the full story "Rip Van Winkle" by W. Irving follows, with additional lithographs and color plates by Everett Shinn and Bauer Lithograph Company, N. Y. on every page. The book cover is in very good condition, with minor wear to the edges and corners, as well as the cloth tape spine. The Spine is tight; the interior pages are very clean and in good shape except for pages 5-6, where apparently Van Winkle's dog decided to tear a large-ish piece out of the top.
