Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1936 Election 2ND Term FRANKLIN Delano "CARRY ON WITH ROOSEVELT" Pinback BUTTON Description This is a nice piece of the political history of the United States. It is a somewhat used, portrait "Pinback Button" from a long time ago. It was made for the “Second Campaign” of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was made by the “Bastian Brothers” of Rochester, New York. The company was founded in 1895 by Theron and Fredrick Bastian. Originally a jewelry store, they expanded into manufacturing lapel pins, buckles, knives, official badges, medals, and other items. They continued to grow and innovate, even purchasing their foremost competitor, “Whitehead & Hoag”, in 1959. Today, the company continues to manufacture pins, buckles, and other items. It was made for the 1936 re-election campaign. Roosevelt ran against Governor Alf Landon, a Republican from Kansas. Landon’s running mate was Frank Knox, who later served as FDR’s secretary of the navy. Though the Great Depression still gripped the country, Roosevelt’s New Deal programs such as unemployment benefits, Social Security and works programs were popular. Landon spoke against FDR’s New Deal as hostile to business, but he made comparatively few campaign appearances. Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner carried 46 of the 48 available states and won 523 votes to 8, the most lopsided election in U.S. history. The most important single person of the 20th Century, Franklin Roosevelt came to the Presidency when the nation was in the grips of the "Great Depression." While Roosevelt did not have all the answers, he did have the knowledge to know he had to do something to get the country moving again and he did that with the "New Deal." As his Presidency progressed, he saw and understood the growing threat from Hitler and he knew how serious it was. He also knew he had to awaken America to the danger and he knew America did not want to wake up. By his deft handling of the situation, helping the Allies when he could, confronting the dictators when he could, he got America ready enough to win World War II.
