Khan appointed himself Shah in 1925 and ruled until 1941. SyriaIn 1920, France took control of Syria after the Battle of Maysalun, which resulted in the defeat of the Syrian army. The French Mandate for Syria and Lebanon was put into effect after the battle. TransjordanIn 1921, the British divided the region east of the Jordan River into the Emirate of Transjordan, which was ruled by Abdullah bin Hussein. The British government granted Transjordan limited independence, but retained substantial influence and control. IraqIn 1920, Britain organized the mandate of Iraq, which included the Ottoman vilayets of Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. Iraq remained a British mandate until 1932. ArabiaIn 1925, Ibn Saud, the king of the Najd, annexed the Hejaz and established his son, Faysal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, as governor. The region was later incorporated into Saudi Arabia.
