These watercolors were highly finished and stylized, and unlike other contemporary portrayals of women, showed them demurely draped as opposed to nude. Ryland’s style shows similarities to both the Pre-Raphaelites, such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Neo-Classical painters like Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Born in 1856 in Biggleswade, United Kingdom, Ryland first studied at the Royal College of Art in London and then in Paris under Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. During 1890–1910, the artist created illustrations for English Illustrated magazine and designed the cover for The Quiver, a periodical focused on morality.
