Located in EUREKA, NEVADA HISTORICAL NOTES FROM AN ONLINE BLOG: HIRAM JOHNSON, one of the pioneer merchants of Eureka, where he located over thirty years ago, has been identified with various enterprises on the western plains for over forty years, and has enjoyed a very prosperous career. When he first came to Eureka there was little in the way of a town here, and his establishment was among the first.Hiram Johnson was horn in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, October 3, 1838, and was reared and educated in Massachusetts. When about grown he came west and for ten years was engaged in freighting across the great plains. He came to Nevada in 1869, and for a year or so bought goods in San Francisco and disposed of them at Elko. In 1871 he came to the infant town of Eureka, and for the first six months was a clerk in a general merchandise store; he then engaged in business on his own account, and has followed commercial pursuits ever since. He was in trade in Salt Lake City from 1887 to 1900, but at the latter date returned to Eureka. He has a store seventeen by one hundred feet, besides several other buildings, all of which he owns, and carries on one of the largest trades in the town. Mr. Johnson is a Republican in politics, but with no time or aspirations for office. He is devoted to his business, and this persevering endeavor is largely responsible for his success. He was made a Mason in Eureka Lodge No. 15. F. & A. M., in 1872, and is past master and has been for all these years one of the most efficient workers of the lodge. In 1876 he married Miss Josephine E. Adams, a native of his own town in Massachusetts, and they are the parents of three children: Adams H.; A. W., in the store with his father; and Anna S.,.a graduate of the Nevada State University and a successful teacher. The family reside in a pleasant home, and have a wide circle of friends. HISTORICAL NOTES: Eureka was first settled in 1864 by a group of silver prospectors from nearby Austin, who discovered rock containing a silver-lead ore on nearby Prospect Peak. According to tradition, the town was named from an incident when a prospector exclaimed “EUREKA!” when he discovered deposits of silver ore. Historically a mining town. The population boomed, reaching a high of 10,000 by 1878, but shrank as decreasing mine production and changing market conditions led to the closing of mines. The town was serviced by the narrow gauge Eureka and Palisade Railroad from 1873 to 1938. Hardware store notes: Foley-Rickard-Johnson-Remington Building This was the site of Eureka's first adobe house built by Abe Bateman. In 1879 M. D. Foley and Richard Rickard built this brick structure which was originally a two-story building. The cost when completed was approximately $28,000. The Remington, Johnson and Company hardware store was located in the northern portion of the present building in the 1880s and 1890s. A book store and stationery store, saloon, assay office, and wells Fargo Express Office used other portions of the first floor during this period. The upstairs was the Masonic and Odd Fellow's Hall. During the 1920s groceries were sold in the old Remington Store. The original iron columns remain today. The second story of the building was completely demolished in 1983 after earthquake damage.
