Description: 1883 CC Morgan Silver Dollar Uncirculated Carson City Coin $1 The History Behind Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars in GSA Holders Morgan dollars were discovered in government vaults in the 1960s and sold through a major promotional campaign held by the General Services Administration (GSA) from the late 1960s through early 1980s. Carson City silver dollars in GSA holders were not necessarily a planned event. In fact, most of these coins were thought to have been melted or lost and were only discovered following the end of the U.S. Mint’s redemption of silver certificates for silver dollars, which ceased in 1964. Following the end of this program, the Federal Reserve came across a large hoard of silver dollars that were previously unknown to exist. Through a series of Government auctions in the 1970's and early 80's, the coins were made available to the public. They were encapsulated in easy to recognize holders.
