He had intended to be a lawyer, but found that it held no attraction for him. He devoted himself to journalism and writing novels instead. He was a significant member of literary circles, and notably became close friends with Dickens in the 1830s. Overall he published 39 books. This can be considered as one of his Lancashire novels, which all together cover some 400 years of history. Historical fact and fiction are freely intermingled, which has led some historians to view him a little critically. The seige of Preston occured when a group of some 4,000 Jacobite rebels moved South into Lancashire in 1715. The government forces sent to meet them managed to surround them in the village of Preston. Despite government attacks being heavily repulsed, the rebels were forced to surrender, and many were transported to the Americas.
