1866 Two Cents, PCGS XF-40 - with "WE" and a trace of red lustre

Description: 1866 Two Cents, still early year of this new denomination concept, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as Extra Fine, XF-40. This was part of the U.S. Treasury's answer to missing and hoarded coinage, from small cents to double eagles, that vanished from circulation as citizens awaited the Civil War's outcome and avoided losing money to discounted paper currency. This was also the start of placing on U.S. coins the patriotic and religious motto "In God We Trust;" it was selected government officials' ideas, but it caught on as catching the mood and fervor of a populace anticipating final victory with Providence's help. Later, by the 1870s, the mission of this coin and the 3 cents were nearing completion as the Mint caught up to the coinage needs of the Eastern U.S. and consumers would get picky about what coins they preferred to use. But that would be in the future; in 1866 and maybe into the next year, this was gladly received and circulated. This is circulated but at a good collectible grade at XF40, with a surprise: a bit of original red lustre around the rims. It is a (technically) still Civil War issue encapsulated for you to enjoy its displayed designs and history. Its features are strong and the ever-vanishing "WE" in the motto is here. These XF-40s are usually not encapsulated but this one can add nicely into a collection of other, encapsulated coins. Enjoy considering!
