Description: The Rural Socrates; or an Account of a celebrated Philosophical Farmer, lately living in Switzerland, and known by the name of Kliyogg [Kleinjogg, ie Jacob Gujer / Gouyer, as set down by Hans Caspar Hirzel]. [Edited by Benjamin Vaughan]. Hallowell, Maine: Peter Edes 1800. xv, 203, xiii pp. Edited by Benjamin Vaughan, the British political radical and Benjamin Franklin associate who advocated for the American cause during the War of Independence, played a part in peace negotiations, and ultimately settled in Hallowell, Maine. Ex-library, with a number of stamps here and there throughout the textblock (the stamps identify the book as part of the bequest of Benjamin De Milt to the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen). Later 1800s binding, worn and frayed but serviceable, lacking endpapers. One leaf of text has a short tear and old tape repair in the text (pictured), affecting (but not obliterating) some text on both sides. Otherwise pages yellowed with foxing, some edge and corner tears, minor blemishes. Title page half detached. Fair to good.
