Description: 1709 FABLES CHOISIES DE LA FONTAINE AVEC LA VIE D'ESOPE, NOVELLE EDITION, (SELECTED FABLES OF LA FONTAINE WITH THE LIFE OF AESOP, NEW EDITION). FRENCH EDITION, COMPLETELY ORIGINAL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. Wonderful book plate of provenance from: "The Right Honorable W.H. Gergeory Kelly. Coole Park Gort. Ireland". Such book plates are extremely rare and collected. The book has its original leather boards and spine. The leather looks to be sheepskin or calfskin. Possibly even pigskin as it was common back then. This is another book you know is old by just looking at it. The book is complete and unrestored. It is tight, no loose pages, no tears, and solid binding. It is incredibly difficult to locate an original unrestored work from this period, let alone in this kind of condition. Please refer to the detailed pictures as additional reference for condition. Jean de la Fontaine July 8th 1621 – April 13th 1695 was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many of Fontaine’s fables were adapted from those of Aesop and Phaedrus; though he did take liberties to make them his own. This 1767 edition includes 32 engraved plates of music at the end of the book. Jean de La Fontaine lived and worked during the XVII century. For special contributions to French literature he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1684. Published in 1668, the collection of fables brought La Fontaine international fame. The works of the ancient Greeks, Indian storytellers, other fabulists and folk tales about animals serve as a source of inspiration for the author. Drawing motives from these works, La Fontaine brings new life to the fable genre. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. Humorous, nuanced and ironical, they were originally aimed at adults but then entered the educational system and were required learning for school children.
