This hand-colored antique print from John Gould’s “The Birds of Great Britain” dates from between 1862-73. This piece elegantly displays two Common Whitethroats (Sylvia cinerea). The gorgeously detailed birds are perched in a fruiting blackberry cane with a Red Admiral butterfly next to a munched leaf.The words on the piece are, from left to right: “J.Gould & HC Richter, del et lith.”; “SYLVIA CINEREA.”; “Walter, Imp.” Unlike the contemporary reproductions of Gould’s work, these are hand-colored and not printed lithographs, as evidenced by the lack of a dot matrix under a lens. This dates them as an original part of the 1862-73 editions.The piece is framed behind glass in its original, antique, lacquered, quarter-sawn oak frame. A muted gold gilt accent enhances the transition between the frame and the image. Print comes ready to hang, out of the box.Condition: The print and frame are in EXCELLENT condition. The frame has some light surface wear, but nothing that greatly detracts from the presentation.
